Trip 004 - Signal Hill & Burns Park Reserve

DATE:
October 29, 2022 (
Saturday afternoon)
DEPART: 1pm, Signal Hill Centennial Monument
LEADER: Joy Liddicoat (021 263 2753)
LEADER: Philip Somerville (021 264 6100)
TRIP GRADE: Easy (3-5 Hours)

This day trip is based on the second trip run by the Otago Tramping Club on September 8, 1923 – Signal Hill to Burkes, which was also a Saturday afternoon trip.

The 2022 version will start from the Signal Hill 1940 NZ Centennial Memorial. From here we plan to be guided through the Burns Park Reserve, which is a DoC reserve surrounded by private property. Readers of the ODT may recall this was featured in the Weekend Mix recently. Philip Somerville suggested this change and Jim McQuillan, from Ōpoho, has helped arrange access through private land into Ravensbourne. In time, we look forward to the reserve being made more freely available to the public, but in the meantime appreciate this opportunity to see some unique forest and outstanding views of Gerry’s Rock and the peninsula.

From the monument we will follow a trap line in the Reserve through mixed bush. The track is slippery and muddy in a few places, so wear your boots. From the reserve, we will follow a fence line down through private property across a paddock to the streets of Upper Ravensbourne. From there, we will re-join the Signal Hill walk and loop back up to the Signal Hill car park.

This trip will meet at the Signal Hill carpark at 1pm on Saturday, October 29 – expect a 3 hour walk for the entire loop. An optional side trip will be tagged on afterwards. It will also take in the Reserve and last up to 2 hours.
