Trip 024 - Victory Beach / Pyramids

It is likely the OTC visited Victory Beach before the first listed trip in 1944. Earlier trips between 1929 and 1931 visited the adjacent Wickliffe Bay (named after John Wickliffe, the European setter ship). The 1944 trip caught the 10am bus to Portobello and walked to Victory Beach from there. This trip has the luxury of driving closer to the beach, avoiding some road walking.

Victory Beach is named from the wreck of the S.S Victory on the beach in 1861. The walking track to the beach takes you past the columnar basalt Pyramids, Large Pyramid or Pū-wheke-o-Kia, to the north, and the Little Pyramid or Te Matai o Kia to the south.

The Family Tramping Group (part of the OTMC) visited this area from time to time, the trip being an ideal walk for youngsters.
