Trip 035 - Mt Charles / Poatiri
DATE:
March 4, 2023
LEADER: To be advised
TRIP GRADE: Easy (3-5 hrs)
MEET:
Clubrooms, 9am
With Mt Charles / Poatiri being the highest point on the Otago Peninsula, it has always been a destination for trampers. The first club trip here was on April 27, 1924 and started with a ferry to Portobello. From here, the trip climbed Mt Charles after walking past Hoopers Inlet and Wickliffe Bay. After having lunch at the summit, they descended and climbed Harbour Cone, before walking the high road back to Andersons Bay.
Since 1924 there have been around 60 trips that have included mt Charles, the most recent in 2020, where frustratingly fog near the top precluded any views.
The 2023 trip will be simpler than the 1924 version, simply involving a climb to the summit and return. The OTMC appreciate the landowner for providing access for this trip.
