Trip 049 - Gabriels Gully / Otago Dam
DATE:
April 23, 2023 (Sunday)
LEADER: Jade Pettinger (022 344 7034)
TRIP GRADE: Easy (3-5 Hours)
MEET: Clubrooms, 8am
Gold was discovered in Gabriel’s Gully in 1861, and led to the Central Otago goldrush. For a while the population of Gabriel’s Gully was twice that of Dunedin.
Due to the distance from Dunedin, it wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that the OTMC first ran a trip to Gabriel’s Gully. Since then, only a handful of trips have been run. This trip has been timed to hopefully enjoy the autumn colours of both nearby Lawrence and Gabriels Gully.
Two shortish trips have been planned. The first starts from Grays Dam and follows historic gold workings up to the Otago Dam.
After returning to the car park area, we will complete the Gabriel’s Gully interpretative walk, which takes 60-90 minutes.
Due to the driving distance this trip will leave the clubrooms at 8am.
