A lot of the formed and named walking tracks on the Otago Peninsula follow legal roads. In the early 1990’s the OTMC became involved in a council led working group that sought to develop some of the legal roads into marked walking tracks.
This involved installing markers and signage, as well as some track creation to overcome issues with terrain (a lot of the legal roads were added to maps that had no contour information, and in some cases the routes proved to be impractical for a road).
One of the tracks the OTMC physically assisted with is the Nyhon Track, which connects Hoopers Inlet with Sandymount Road.
This trip will be visiting the Nyhon Track, and if we use a section of Highcliff and Sandymount Roads a nice loop can be completed. If the weather is good, a side trip the Hereweka / Harbour Cone is a nice option, as the view from the top is exceptional.
