Otago Tramping Club trips have visited the Waitati area since the end of September 1923 (the first month of club trips). Foundation member Elizabeth Tweedie mentions ‘the crib & Saratoga’ at Waitati several times, and it appears this was used on many club trips.
Saratoga House was a hotel located near where the State Highway and the local road into Waitati is today. Orokonui Creek was first listed as a trip destination for November 2, 1930, and was visited a handful of times up to 1985.
The first OTMC trip to include a circum-navigation of the Orokonui Perimeter fence was in 2008.
This trip will start from Orokonui Road, and traverse around the Orokonui Creek wetlands before heading up towards Mopanui & Blueskin Roads. A circuit of the fence completes a loop back to Orokonui Road.
