The Otago Tramping Club had plenty of trips to the Otago Peninsula right from the start of the club in 1923. The first to Sandymount (specifically) was in December 1923, and since then over 50 trips have featured Sandymount.
Early trips travelled by Ferry Boat to Ross Point (not sure where this was, maybe near Grassy Point?), and walked from here. Other trips took the train to Port Chalmers and boated across from here.
A 1964 trip went from Seal Point to Sandymount – this was led by Life Member Trevor Pullar and was advertised as including fishing. More recent trips have traversed from Sandymount to Smaills Beach via Sandfly Bay and Boulder Beach (formerly known as Beatties Beach).
This trip will be a circuit around Sandymount and Lovers Leap, before descending to Sandfly Bay (where Sea Lions are often present).
We will finish with a climb up the sandhill to the Sandfly Bay car park.
