This trip will almost be exactly 1,195 months since the first Otago Tramping Club trip to Maungatua, which was held on Boxing Day 1923.
Miss Elizabeth Tweedie wrote about this trip in her 1923 tramping diary, noting the trip was led by President Oscar Balk, they travelled by bus (5 shillings each) and had 18 members attending. Additionally, she notes ‘just about the best day of the lot, any amount of fun and tinned fruit. Also, sweets and cigarettes’.
Since then, there has been close to 100 trips to Maungatua, covering every decade of the club’s existence. Most of these have been day trips, but there have been several weekend trips that have included a visit to Maungatua as part of more extended trips such as Post Office Creek – Maungatua – Outram or Maungatua – Lee Stream – Pyramid Hut.
As this trip is in mid-winter it is planned as a trip to above the bushline, and onto the Maungatua summit if conditions allow.
