The final winter trip on the 100 Trips programme is headed to The Catlins where four short walks will be undertaken.
The first Otago Tramping Club trip to The Catlins was Easter 1928. It is likely the party would have travelled by train to Owaka, and then walked to their camp at Pounawea.
Since then, there have been over 50 trips to The Catlins, including day and weekend trips, a search and rescue exercise and a stoat eradication weekend. Most trips have been for tramping, and many of the beaches and short walks have been visited over the years.
This trip will leave Dunedin at 8am, and head for the first short trip – Maclean Falls. Following this we will be heading for the Tautuku Estuary Boardwalk where we will have lunch.
The final two walks will be to the Matai Falls and the more recent walk along a section of the closed Catlins River Railway which includes fine examples of the steep rock cuttings required to build the line between Puketiro, Caberfeidh and Maclennan.
Expect to be back in Dunedin around 4.00pm
