Trip 088 - Mt Somers

DATE: September 9-10, 2023
LEADER: Caitlin Robertson (027 489 1153)
LEADER: Andrew McConnell (022 089 6537)
TRIP GRADE: All (Multiple Options)

The Mount Somers area, located in the wider Hakatere Conservation Park, became very popular for the club following a trip led by the late Ken Powell in May 1997. As it turned out, one of the final OTMC trips to utilise a bus for transport was a later trip to Mt Somers in 2001.

There have also been multiple occasions when the Mt Somers area has been used as a ‘Plan B’ when the weather further to the west has made other areas unattractive for tramping.

Due to the need to now book hut space at Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles Hut, this trip is planned as a camping trip, and provide options to get up onto the tops (staying in the huts can still be an option, as long as it fits in with the leaders plans, and with participants responsible for the bookings).

The club has camped in Morgan Stream before (a large, sheltered valley that drains out via the ‘water caves’). From here there is reasonable access to both the summit of Mt Somers, or to the Winterslow Range – both worthy destinations for great views and nice tops travel.
