TRIP GRADE: E (3-5 hours)

The first OTC trip to Trotters Gorge was in May 1930 – as it was also a day trip it is presumed that the party travelled by train to Katiki Railway Station (now closed) and proceeded on foot to Trotters Gorge. The return was listed as ‘via Horse Range to Palmerston’, so possibly not a lot of time to explore the gorge itself as you wouldn’t want to miss the train.
The club has held many trips to the area over the years, including some of our club picnics and mid-winter socials.
This trip will include the Trotters Gorge Track, which is a short loop from the DoC camping area and climbs up high enough to obtain impressive views over the area.
A second walk will allow the valley to the University Hut and beyond to be explored. This track crossed Trotters Creek numerous times (normally easy crossings) and provides glimpses of the limestone formations the area is known for.
