Trip 095 - Green Lake Tops Trip
DATE:
September 30 - October 1, 2023 (& 3-Day Option)
LEADER: Joe Bretherton (027 362 1221)
TRIP GRADE: All (Multiple Options)
Green Lake in southern Fiordland is unusual in that it has no lake level outlet – the outflows are subterranean. The lake is also the basin of the largest known landslide on Earth.
The first time the Otago Tramping Club visited the wider Lake Monowai area was at Queen’s Birthday 1964, and the club have since returned for around 30 weekend trips. This trip may have a couple of options as long as we have sufficient leaders.
Joe is planning a three-day trip from Lake Monowai to the saddle with Green Lake, and then off-track tops travel over Mt Cuthbert and through to Rodger Inlet, on the shore of Lake Monowai. This will be suited to a smaller party, and experience with off-track tramping / camping will be required (you will need to be available on Monday, October 2 for this option).
Depending on leaders, there are other options to head to the 10-bunk Green Lake Hut, or if the weather allows, a better option can be to camp on the ridge to the north of Green Lake, where there are numerous tarns and great views
