Pineapple Point - Proposed Centennial Project
Pineapple Point was a well-frequented lookout point alongside the current Pineapple Track. It is referenced in tramping reports that pre-date the club, as well as being mentioned as a resting place during the climb of Flagstaff on the OTC's inaugural trip on September 1, 1923.
The OTMC are working with the Dunedin City Council (landowner) with a view to install a short side-track from the Pineapple Track to the Point, and installing a seat and information panel / plaque etc. to celebrate the Centenary of the club. From Pineapple Point, the Ross Bush Track (now referred to as the original Pineapple Track) can be used to complete a circuit back to Booth Road.
An official opening at Pineapple Point is planned for September 1, 2023 (a Friday afternoon) as part of 100 Trips for 100 Years, with a further celebration during the Centenary Weekend.
Update - May 2022: Discussions with the DCC are very positive, and we plan to make a start on the broom clearing over the winter months. We have submitted a document outlining our plans to the DCC, a copy is available here.
Update - August 2022: The broom has been removed, and the view over the city restored. The start of the track work will commence shortly.
