New Zealand Mountain Safety Council

New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a leading authority for outdoor safety information and training in New Zealand.

Formed in 1965 in response to the increasing number of accidents in the bush and mountains, MSC has since developed into an organisation with 27 Branches, 1000 volunteer instructors, and 17 member organisations.

Groups of acknowledged industry experts advise MSC on current practices, equipment and standards in their respective areas and are responsible to MSC for steering the work of Programme Managers.

 Programme disciplines include:

  • Alpine

  • Bushcraft

  • Avalanche

  • Abseil

  • Hunts

  • Firearms

  • Outdoor First Aid

  • Risk Management

  • Outdoor Leader

MSC’s skilled volunteer instructors deliver the programmes, sharing their outdoor skills and knowledge with the community to promote safe participation in land-based recreational, educational and adventure activities.

 MSC also works to:

  • Undertake research and develop standards for outdoor safety

  • Produce key outdoor safety information

  • Publicise the outdoor safety message
