Tramping is
the New Zealand term for what other countries may call bushwalking,
hiking or rambling.
It means to
get out and explore some of our magnificent countryside, far away
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In New Zealand in
general, and the South Island in particular it is very easy to
drive half an hour from a main city and be in a great tramping
area.
Tramping means
different things for different people. Some people like the 'getting
away from it all' feeling, others the companionship of others, and
others like the challenge of getting from A to B in untracked
country.
Tramping in
New Zealand can vary from a simple 4 hour walk on a well formed
track to an epic multi-week adventure, relying on your wits and
map only.
There are many
ways to get into tramping, and the best way is to join a club.
Most larger towns, and cities have a tramping club operating.
You may find them in the phone book, or enquire at a visitor
centre
or outdoor shop. A list is available here.
A good introduction
is to attend a Bushcraft or similar course. The OTMC run a
Bushcraft
course every February/March.
The most important
thing about tramping is to enjoy it. Take the time to get a comfortable
pair of boots, a good pack and some good company - and off you
go!. NEVER tramp alone.
