Trip 001 - Mt Allan - Silver Peaks - Hightop

The genesis for this trip pre-dates the Otago Tramping Club, but it is probable that the outcome of a trip by local trampers over this route in December 1922 led to the formation of the Otago Tramping Club the next year (1923). For this reason this trip has been chosen as the first trip to be run as part of 100 Trips for 100 Years.

Road access from Taioma and transport logistics has led to this trip being a 'there and back' trip from Hightop. If going as far as Poplar Hut the trip will be a moderate to fit trip (around 8hrs return), but there are options to shorten the trip, stopping at the Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve boundary on the ridge between the Painted Forest and Big Stream (Pulpit Rock is at the head of Big Stream).
